The YuTru Ecosystem
YuTru represents an ecosystem of businesses that rely on YuTru to identify and verify the identity of their customers. The YuTru ID held by a customer can be used at any of the businesses within the ecosystem, in the same way that your passport is accepted by any airport immigration counter in the world or a Visa card is accepted anywhere in the world the Visa logo is displayed. One a smaller scale, in PNG, a YuTru ID holder who enrolled at one business, is automatically trusted at any other business to which they present their YuTru ID.
For Customers
For a customer, the benefits of registering for a YuTru ID are substantial. A customer avoids the time-consuming process of signing up and filling out paper forms at a business. A customer enjoys a quick and efficient experience to identify themselves to a business because they don’t have to carry around paper-based identity documents. A customer avoids leaving their personally identifiable information at each and every single institution they do business with, all over the PNG economy this happens making PNG businesses a really good target for hacking. A customer also can transact remotely over the Internet, because the ID they present is digital and trusted as much as a face-to-face interaction is. (In fact, in a future post, we’ll explain why in reality that digital transactions are more trustworthy than face-to-face ones. Sounds counterintuitive, right?
For Businesses
For a business, using YuTru means the risk of financial loss due to the use of false names, mismatching a face to a photo, or fraudulent ID documents. A business avoids the significant cost and complexity of building their own identity scheme (think, login and password, and all the other functions that go with making that work securely) for customers to access services online. A business can onboard new customers with the same legal certainty as they would if the customer traveled into their branch. A business avoids holding personally identifiable information about their customers, which avoids a significant reputational (and in the near future financial) risk in the case they are hacked. A business can also just make their customers happier by valuing their time as they would their own.
From a Bird’s Eye View
What is often difficult to see – because each business focuses on their own needs and view of the customer – is that every business in PNG which creates an identity system to know their customers is inadvertently contributing to poorer security and experiences for customers, businesses, and the entire PNG economy. And, if the process is not digital and is paper-based, well, that is as weak as it sounds.
Without a single identification scheme like other countries have, which any business can rely on, the inefficiency for PNG businesses, customers, and our broader economy will rise and hold our economy back. Customers will have to carry more and more credentials to identify themselves, remember more and more passwords, and a major hurdle of inefficiency will continue to hinder who people do business here.
